Castration by bullets

A matatu operator is nursing serious injuries at the Coast General Hospital after he was hit by a stray bullet as police battled gangs in Mombasa.

29-year-old Kitsao Katana, a conductor, was shot on his private parts after being caught in the crossfire at Soko Mjinga in Kisauni.

Katana narrated how he heard screams when police stormed the area notorious for criminal gangs, and how he was hit while scampering for safety.

“I heard strange noises and people started running away. I also started running but something hit me in my genitals. I was brought to hospital by a boda boda,” he said while writhing in pain.

The conductor regretted the incident fearing that it could affect his life even after he recovers.

“My life could be ruined as I am not sure if I will be able to enjoy intimacy with my future wife,” he added.

During the morning incident an eight-year-old boy,  Rajab Mohamed, who was walking to school was also shot in the chest in a similar scenario as his mother explained.

“I was preparing to have my breakfast after the boys left for school. A few minutes later, I heard Rajab crying. His uniform was blood-soaked and the shirt was torn. I rushed him to a clinic where I was told it was a bullet and it was still in his body,” she said.

Kisauni police boss Richard Ngatia confirmed the shootings assuring that investigations would be launched.
